Harmony House by Nic Sheff6/9/2023 Jen was odd and aloof when it came to the things happening to her. But after finishing the book, I think it’s more that I just didn’t like them. At first, I thought it was just the typical Horror Character Disconnection – where you refuse to let yourself like the characters because you don’t know who will survive and who won’t, so you refuse to get attached. I don’t know.? I felt really detached from them and their stories. It wasn’t scary and despite the fast pace and moments of intrigue, it was an overall boring read with a disappointing ending that left me feeling unsatisfied. Which, with Nic Sheff’s past, I guess that isn’t so surprising however, it was disappointing. This book was basically one giant metaphor for addiction. Based on the cover, title and synopsis, I was gearing up for something creepy and spooky that would make me want to sleep with the lights on. Harmony House was one of my most anticipated books of the year. Stop RIGHT HERE if you don’t want to be spoiled! Because I need to rant and I can’t rant without spoilers. Simpson’s portraits invite us to look, by their sidelong glances or direct gazes. Featuring 160 iconic collages, Lorna Simpson Collages explores the beauty of black hair with visually-rich mixed media juxtaposed with vintage ads torn from old. But it is also a wash, a shadow cast over what we cannot know in these women. Watercolor is the perfect medium for Simpson here because of how it holds light and appears to be translucent. Black women’s hair is epistemology, but we cannot always discern its codes. It is forest and ocean, its own emotional weather. It is sinuous and cloudy and fully alive. The hair she paints has a mind of its own. Black women’s heads of hair are galaxies unto themselves, solar systems, moonscapes, volcanic interiors. In Lorna Simpson’s collages, “the black and boisterous” hair is the universal governing principle. Lorna Simpson and Elizabeth Alexander, Lorna Simpson Collages, San. That suggestion was summarily voted down. The original book came to my attention sometime after it was published and I tried to talk my book club into reading it. This year he rewrote his original work and made it accessible for younger readers targeting middle grade students, grades 5-8. Review: In 2010 Sam Kean published The Disappearing Spoon for adults. "Using chemicals as weapons started in ancient Greece, when the Spartans tried to gas Athenians into submission with the most advanced technology they had at the time: smoke. Unfortunately, even when you could use it, this gigantic cheat sheet may have seemed less than helpful! But the table and each box on it are full of secrets waiting to be decoded" (11). You may have talked about it in class, and you may even have been able to use it during tests and exams. "When you think of the periodic table, you probably think of that colorful chart with many columns and rows hanging on the wall of your science classroom. Title: The Disappearing Spoon and Other True Tales of Rivalry, Adventure, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements (Young Reader's Edition) by Sam Kean Rachel smythe6/8/2023 But I think I think sexual relationships can also be just deeply human. I feel that often sexual relationships are often framed, especially in the context of romance, as the only point to them is being titillating or erotic. But for me personally, with this story, I really want the focus to lie in Persephone rediscovering herself, building those relationships and being able to live her life–the escalation of her intimate relationship with her soon to be husband, obviously. And I absolutely understand why people really like revenge in the sense that it’s very cathartic. From Persephone’s perspective, I think sometimes there is this expectation around that revenge plot line. Rachel Smythe: At this particular plot line for me, it’s having a heavy emphasis on healing. What can you share about you plans for that? It’s time for the honeymoon part of their relationship to begin, in a sense, as season three picks up. Sabina Graves, io9: Let’s talk about building up to a really big moment between Persephone and Hades after she went full Queen of the Underworld against Kronos in the season two finale. This in turn, makes me wonder about the nature of love and the idea that it can cause us both joy and pain.Īs the story develops, we see how the nightingale is prepared to sacrifice herself to create the red rose in order that the student can take this to the girl he loves. This made me wonder why why did the nightingale take this challenge on? She seems to see the student, and his longing for the girl of his dreams, as the embodiment of love saying ‘Here indeed is the true lover….What I sing of he suffers: what is joy to me, to him is pain’. Yet not quite a fairy story, as it is not the student who embarks on the quest, but the nightingale who goes to the three trees in search of this red rose. This story, the Nightingale and the Rose, has a feel of a fairy story to it, with the young student, the quest for a red rose for his beloved and the element of three, which is often found in fairytales. DISPATCHES av Herr, Michael: The best book I have ever read on men and war in our time.
